This is a very common question that I believe everyone has asked at some point in their life. I have even asked this question. If the year 2020 has not made you ask this question, I do not know what will.
People have many different opinions about Who God truly is. The Bible is very clear about Who God is. Before we get there, Who is God to you?
From your perspective and experiences, maybe God is mean. Maybe you feel God has been harsh or cruel with you through losing a loved one or a divorce. I wonder, do you know God well enough to believe that God is unjust? For me, it would be wrong if I were to make a judgement on someone’s character without really knowing them. Why do we do the same with God?
God loves you! The first six words of John 3:16 state, “For God so LOVED the WORLD…” You and I are in this world. God LOVES everyone equally! God made all of us as Genesis 1:27 tells us, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
God has a plan for all of our lives! God knew who we were before we were formed in our mother’s womb. Isn’t that amazing? Jeremiah wrote a declaration concerning this in the first part of Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee;” Later on in his book, Jeremiah makes another true statement about our Creator, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11
Has your perspective changed about the character of God? Let’s take a look at just a few characteristics of God in order to know Who He is a little bit better.
I am pretty sure that all of us agree that lying is a bad character trait. No one likes being lied to. Can I share some unique news with you? God CANNOT lie. That’s right. He is not capable of doing so. The Apostle Paul wrote to Titus explaining this very truth in Titus 1:2, “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;” Wouldn’t it be awesome to have a relationship with someone who cannot lie?
In addition, God is immutable. That is a big word! In short, it comes to an understanding of, “God cannot and will not change.” Malachi, the second to last prophet, wrote in Malachi 3:6, “For I am the LORD, I change not;.” God loved you before, God loves you now, and God will love you forever. Our past and our future sins will not change God’s love for us.
The author of Hebrews wrote in chapter 10 verse 17, “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.” Daniel 9:9 even states, “To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him.”
I could share other characteristics of God, but I cannot share them all in this short article. “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
God does not change Who He is from person to person. God has revealed Himself through the words of the Bible and has shown Who He is. Get to know God by reading His Word!
