Proverbs 3:1-2
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Thought:
Nothing can give us greater joy than hearing and following our Master’s voice.
There is a famous and colloquial saying in Spanish that teaches us a practical and necessary principle: “He who does not take advice, does not grow old.”
The truth that this short saying communicates to us is that he who wants to make good decisions and have a full life learns to listen to the wisdom of those around him.
In today’s verses, the proverbist encourages his son to listen to his advice. Doing this guaranteed not necessarily many years of life, but a full life, filled with real joy and peace. Someone who hears the advice of the wise people around him may perhaps die young from some drastic episode or health problems, but the reality is that he who learns to live wisely will enjoy a life full of blessings.
The question then should be this: If it is true that the one who listens to advice enjoys a good life, how much more will the one who hears and follows the advice and scriptural commands enjoy a full and delightful life? I dare say that no one has a more pleasant and delightful life than he who hears what God commands him to do and does it. Will it be a life free of trials and tribulations? No. But trials and tribulations do not rob the joy of one who walks with God and follows Him closely.
Dear friend, nothing can give us greater joy than hearing and following our Master’s voice. What commandment do you know that God has given you that you are not following? True joy comes through obedience to our God.
