Necessity #13: The Word of God give us comfort.
Again, Romans 15:4 says, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
I love that phrase “comfort of the Scriptures.” There is nothing to comfort my soul like sitting down with my well-worn Bible and a cup of coffee. There’s hardly anything wrong that spending time in the Scripture can’t make right.
Necessity #14: The Word of God give us joy.
Psalm 19:8 says, “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.”
Psalm 119:111 says, “Thy testimonies I have taken as a heritage forever, For they are the rejoicing of my heart.”
A joyful Christian is one who is spending time in the Word. Show me a joyless Christian and at least one of his problems is that he has no disciplined time in the Scriptures.
