Today’s Verse

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation, for the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

II Peter 1:20-21

But what about the human authors? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter and many others wrote the books of the Bible. How can we say that God is the author?

Today’s verses help us understand where and how we received the Word of God. No Scripture is “of any private interpretation” or private origin. No one from his own mind sat down and wrote the words of Scripture. Why?

Because “prophecy” the forth-telling of God’s truth “never came by the will of man.” Man could never have dreamed up the truth of Scripture. It is contrary to his own nature. Rather, “holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”

The Greek phrase employed here was used to describe how the wind moves a ship along. In the way the wind moves a sailing vessel, The Spirit of God moved the men of God and guided them in writing Scripture. God breathed truth through the personalities and vocabularies of many different men.

The same God who could cause Mary’s pregnancy is the same God who wrote the Word of God and delivered it through human handwriting. I sure love the Word of God; there is no other book in all of the world like it. Do you?
