Imagine a small class A football team playing the state finals at the U of A Stadium. After 10 minutes, they are down 21-3. The coach calls a time out and gathers his players. The players have stars in their eyes and say, “Wow aren’t these great uniforms?” “I see Coach Jedd Fisch on the sideline.” “Look I see my grandma in the stands!” “Isn’t this fun?”
What does the coach say? He says, “Look at the scoreboard. We are not here to have fun but to win the game.”
Church, are we really impacting the community with the gospel? We can be fat and lazy in our spiritual smugness that we have nice uniforms; we have had great preachers visit us; or we are enjoying ourselves… By what standards do we judge ourselves? Are we more like Jerusalem or Laodicea?
A man goes to the doctor for tests but says, “Doc, don’t tell me how bad it is, I don’t want to know.” You know it is bad when you do not want to know how bad it is. We need to see the truth!
Church, are we like Laodicea? Is there a difference between what we say or think about our church and what Jesus knows we are?
