We learned from Step #1 to look for a divine appointment; and, in Step #2, initiate a spiritual conversation. In Step #3 we avoid being sidetracked by religion.
Jesus gives us one more step in our story. In Step #4, we are to expect a spiritual harvest once we have accepted that divine appointment and completed steps 1-3. Continuing in our story, we see the disciples return to the well in verse 27. They too marveled at the fact that He was speaking with such a woman.
Notice that no one would question Jesus about it. They didn’t ask, “What do You seek?” or “Why are You talking to her?” What is revealed is what happened with the women. Notice her testimony.
The woman left her water pot and went back into the city and spoke of her new faith to the men. After all, she knew them best! Notice what she said from today’s verse. She knew in her heart who He was!
The men responded by coming to Jesus too, they went out of the city and came unto Him. I really believe there is a “seminary” lesson here in Sychar. While the Samaritans were coming, the disciples urged Jesus to eat the food they had brought.
He says, “I have meat to eat that ye know not of.” They wondered who fed Him while they were away.
Jesus clarifies things by saying that His “meat (food) is to do the will” of God and to “finish His work.” Jesus turned a city upside down with His divine appointment. WOW! What could happen if we accepted our divine appointments with sincerity and a desire to make a difference?
